Title of Program: Accountability and Transparency with our Tax Dollars
Presentation Description: State Auditor Cindy Byrd will discuss the divisions of the State Auditor’s office and the various types of government audits your State Auditor’s office performs that are vital to the accountability of tax dollars in our state. This session will include a detailed presentation of the Governor’s investigative audit request of Epic Charter Schools which highlights a for profit education management company and its two owners.
Presentation Objectives: As a result of participating in this activity, learners will:
- Develop a clear understanding of government audit types and the purpose each serves
- Examine the important takeaways from the investigative audit of Epic Charter Schools
- Review the state laws and financial requirements of which governing school boards must be aware to fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to oversee a school’s finances

About State of Oklahoma Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd, CPA: Cindy Byrd, CPA, is Oklahoma’s 13th State Auditor & Inspector, the first woman elected to this statewide-elected office. Byrd has worked for the State Auditor’s office for over 24 years and served as Deputy State Auditor and the Director for the County Audit Division. State Auditor Byrd serves as Vice-Chairman on the Oklahoma State Pension Commission, Member of the State Board of Equalization, Chairman of the State Board of Equalization Sub-Committee, and Commissioner of the Commissioners of the Land Office. Byrd earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree from East Central University in Ada.
